The Mini N14 is a 1.6-litre turbocharged inline-four petrol engine used in high-performance second-generation Mini models, specifically the Cooper S (2007–2010) and John Cooper Works (2008–2012). It was the first “Prince” family engine to feature turbocharging and direct injection. 
Core Technical Features
  • Turbocharging: Uses a twin-scroll turbocharger (BorgWarner K03) for immediate throttle response and high low-end torque.
  • Fuel Injection: Features direct fuel injection, spraying fuel directly into the combustion chamber rather than the intake ports.
  • Valvetrain: Double Overhead Cam (DOHC) with single VANOS (variable valve timing) on the intake side. Unlike the N12/N16/N18, the N14 does not have the Valvetronic variable lift system.
  • Construction: Lightweight aluminum block and cylinder head.

Known Weaknesses
While powerful, the N14 is notorious for several reliability issues that were largely addressed in its successor, the N18:
  • “Death Rattle”: Caused by the timing chain tensioner failing or the chain stretching, which can lead to catastrophic engine failure if not addressed.
  • Carbon Buildup: Because it is direct-injected, fuel doesn’t wash the intake valves, leading to heavy carbon “coking” that reduces performance and causes misfires.
  • High-Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP): Frequent failures of the HPFP can cause long cranking times or limp mode.
  • Oil Consumption: Prone to consuming significant amounts of oil due to PCV system flaws or worn valve stem seals. 
Identification
You can identify an N14 by looking at the valve cover: it typically has a larger, flatter plastic cover compared to the more contoured N18 cover, and it uses a coiled wire dipstick
