The MINI W11B16 (commonly known as the W11) is a 1.6-litre, supercharged, 4-cylinder petrol engine. It was co-developed by Chrysler and Rover under a joint venture called Tritec Motors in Curitiba, Brazil. This engine is highly celebrated for its durability and distinct supercharger whine, powering the first-generation MINI Cooper S models from 2002 to 2007.
Core Engineering Design
Unlike modern MINI engines developed by BMW, the W11 was designed with an old-school, heavy-duty philosophy. It was built specifically to handle forced induction without breaking.
- Iron Block Construction: The engine block is made of heavy cast iron, providing exceptional structural rigidity. This allows the engine to handle high boost pressures and makes it incredibly popular for aftermarket tuning.
- Single Overhead Cam (SOHC): It uses a simple, robust single camshaft design operating 16 valves (4 valves per cylinder). This layout reduces mechanical complexity compared to Dual Overhead Cam (DOHC) setups.
- Roots-Type Supercharger: Air is forced into the engine via an Eaton M45 supercharger driven by the serpentine belt. It features an air-to-air intercooler mounted directly on top of the engine to cool the intake charge.
- Unique Water Pump Drive: To save space in the cramped engine bay, the water pump is bolted directly to the back of the supercharger and is driven by the supercharger’s internal gears.

Power Variations & Applications
The W11 engine underwent a slight revision during its production cycle and was tuned differently depending on the factory package:
- Pre-Facelift (2002–2004): Produced 120 kW (163 hp) and 210 Nm of torque.
- Vehicles: MINI Cooper S Hatchback (R53).
- Facelift (2005–2007): Upgraded to 125 kW (170 hp) and 220 Nm of torque through a revised supercharger (teflon-coated rotors) and shorter gear ratios.
- Vehicles: MINI Cooper S Hatchback (R53) and Cooper S Convertible (R52).
- John Cooper Works (JCW) Kits: Upgraded versions featuring a smaller supercharger pulley, ported cylinder head, and remapped ECU, pushing power to 155 kW (210 hp) or 160 kW (218 hp) in the limited GP Edition.
