The MINI W10B16 (commonly known as the W10) is a 1.6-litre, naturally aspirated, 4-cylinder petrol engine. Developed by Tritec Motors (a joint venture between Chrysler and Rover), it is the baseline, non-supercharged sibling to the W11 engine you looked at previously. It powered first-generation MINI One and MINI Cooper models from 2001 to 2008. 

Core Engineering Design
While it shares the same foundational block size as the supercharged W11, the W10 was engineered for fuel efficiency and daily reliability rather than high boost pressure.
  • Cast Iron Block & Alloy Head: Like the W11, it uses a highly durable cast iron block. However, because it lacks a supercharger, it is under significantly less mechanical stress and is known for lasting well past 300,000 kilometres if maintained. 
  • Single Overhead Cam (SOHC): It utilizes a simple, low-maintenance single camshaft driving 16 valves via hydraulic rockers, eliminating the need for manual valve adjustments. 
  • Timing Chain Driven: Unlike many 1.6L engines of its era that used rubber timing belts, the W10 uses a robust steel timing chain designed to last the lifetime of the engine.
  • Traditional Water Pump: Unlike the supercharged engine (where the water pump is driven off the back of the supercharger), the W10 uses a standard, easily accessible water pump driven directly by the serpentine accessory belt.

Power Variations & Applications
BMW managed the power differences between the baseline “MINI One” and the peppier “MINI Cooper” entirely through software tuning (ECU map) and exhaust setups:
  • MINI One Variant (Low Output): Detuned to produce 66 kW (90 hp) and 140 Nm of torque.
    • Vehicles: MINI One Hatchback (R50) and MINI One Convertible (R52) (2001–2008). 

  • MINI Cooper Variant (Standard Output): Tuned to produce 85 kW (115 hp) and 150 Nm of torque.
    • Vehicles: MINI Cooper Hatchback (R50) and MINI Cooper Convertible (R52) (2001–2008).
