The Mercedes-Benz M271 (E18 ML) is a 1.8-litre, 4-cylinder engine featuring a Kompressor (supercharger). It was the mainstay for the C-Class (W203 and early W204) in South Africa, powering the C180K and C200K models. It is highly regarded for its balance of fuel economy and linear power delivery.

The M271 used different pulleys and ECU maps to differentiate the C180 and C200:

  • Twin-Lanchester Balance Shafts: Two shafts located in the crankcase rotate at twice the engine speed to eliminate four-cylinder vibrations, making it feel very refined.
  • Variable Valve Timing (VVT): Features continuous adjustment on both the intake and exhaust camshafts to optimize torque across the rev range.
  • Lightweight Construction: Uses an aluminum alloy engine block and cylinder head to keep front-end weight low.
  • Sequential Fuel Injection: Unlike the later “CGI” (Direct Injection) versions, the Kompressor models used traditional port fuel injection.
Critical Maintenance & “Common Pitfalls”
While durable, the M271 has specific failure points that can be catastrophic if ignored:
  • Timing Chain Stretch: This is the most famous issue. The single-row (simplex) chain tends to stretch over time (usually around 120,000–150,000 km). If it jumps a tooth, it can cause valves to hit the pistons. Listen for a “rattle” on cold start.
  • Camshaft Adjuster Gears: The teeth on the sprockets can wear down to “sharks’ teeth,” causing timing errors and rough idling.
  • Cam Magnet Leaks: Oil can leak from the two circular magnets on the front of the engine and “wick” up the wiring harness into the ECU. Installing “sacrificial” pigtail wires is a cheap, essential preventative measure.
  • Breather Hoses: A small rubber hose under the airbox/intake manifold often splits, causing a rough idle or a “lean” fault code.
