The Land Rover Freelander 2 2.2L TD4 (224DT) is a 4-cylinder turbodiesel engine developed through the Ford-PSA partnership (known as the Duratorq or HDi DW12). In South Africa, it is legendary for being one of the most reliable engines Land Rover ever used, often reaching over 300,000 km with basic care.

Performance Outputs
The 224DT engine was tuned for different outputs depending on the model year and badge (TD4 vs. SD4):
  • TD4 (Standard): Approximately 110–118 kW (150–160 hp) and 400 Nm of torque.
  • SD4 (High Output): Boosted to 140 kW (190 hp) and 420 Nm of torque (standard in later Freelander 2 models).
Key Design Features
  • Engine Block: Made of double-walled cast iron for exceptional strength and noise dampening.
  • Timing System: Uses a timing belt to drive the exhaust camshaft, which then drives the intake camshaft via a short internal chain.
  • Counter-Rotating Balance Shafts: Integrated into the oil pump assembly to reduce vibration, making it one of the smoothest diesel 4-cylinders of its era.
  • Piezo Injectors: High-speed injectors that allow for multiple injection pulses per combustion cycle, improving fuel economy and reducing “diesel clatter.”
Maintenance & Common Issues
While generally “bulletproof,” there are a few items to watch for:
  • Timing Belt Interval: Land Rover originally suggested 240,000 km, but specialists in SA strongly recommend replacement every 120,000 km or 7 years due to our harsh heat.
  • Intercooler Hoses: The rubber hoses are prone to splitting, leading to a “whooshing” sound, black smoke, and loss of power (Limp Mode).
  • Throttle Body: The plastic internal gears can strip over time, usually causing the engine to “shudder” when turning off or triggering an engine management light.
  • Rear Camshaft Core Plug: A small plug at the back of the head can occasionally leak oil; it’s a cheap part but labor-intensive to reach.
