Landrover Discovery 4 3.6d 368DT TDV8 engine

R85,000.00

It is important to clarify that the Land Rover Discovery 4 was never factory-fitted with a TDV8 engine. Factory diesel options for the Discovery 4 were limited to the 2.7L TDV6 and the 3.0L TDV6/SDV6.

However, the 3.6L TDV8 (368DT) is a popular aftermarket conversion for Discovery 4 owners seeking more power and a V8 soundtrack, as the engine fits into the L319 chassis with modification.

Engine Specifications (3.6L TDV8 – 368DT)
If you are looking at a converted vehicle or the engine itself, here are the technical details for the 3.6L unit originally found in the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport (2007–2010):
Feature Specification
Type 32-Valve, 90° V8, DOHC
Displacement 3,628 cc (3.6L)
Aspiration Twin Variable Geometry Turbochargers (VGT)
Power Output 200 kW (272 hp) @ 4,000 RPM
Torque 640 Nm @ 2,000 RPM
Block Material Compacted Graphite Iron (CGI)
Timing System Timing Chain (unlike the belt-driven TDV6)
Key Design Features
  • Performance: The 640 Nm of torque provides effortless towing and acceleration, even in a heavy vehicle like the Discovery.
  • Refinement: Designed to mask typical diesel clatter, the exhaust was specially tuned by Land Rover to produce a more sonorous V8 note.
  • Fuel System: Uses a high-pressure common rail system with Piezo injectors.
Common Issues & Reliability
While robust, the 3.6L TDV8 has several well-documented failure points that require attention:
  • Turbocharger Failure: This is the most common major issue, often caused by oil starvation or carbon build-up. Accessing the turbos for replacement is extremely difficult and often requires lifting the body off the chassis.
  • EGR Valves: Like many Land Rover diesels, the EGR valves can clog, leading to performance loss and “Limp Mode”.
  • Intercooler Hoses: These are considered “consumables” as they are prone to splitting under boost.
  • Oil Leaks: Common leaks occur from the rocker cover gaskets or turbo oil feed pipes.
Discovery 4 Conversion Notes
If you are considering a TDV8 conversion, be aware of these requirements:
  • Transmission: The 3.0L Discovery’s 6HP28 gearbox usually needs to be swapped for the 6HP26 gearbox from the donor 3.6L vehicle to match the bellhousing and torque converter.
  • Electronics: A successful swap requires the full set of Range Rover Sport ECUs and wiring loom modifications.
