Landrover Discovery 3 2.7L 276DT TDV6 engine

R55,000.00

The Land Rover Discovery 3 2.7L TDV6 (276DT) engine is a 60-degree V6 diesel powerplant co-developed by Ford and PSA (Peugeot-Citroën). Known for its smooth power delivery and high torque, it is the most common engine found in the Discovery 3 (L319) and early Range Rover Sport models.
Core Technical Specifications

Performance Outputs
  • Power140 kW (188 hp) @ 4,000 RPM.
  • Torque440 Nm @ 1,900 RPM.
  • Towing Capacity: Specifically tuned for high low-end torque, allowing the Discovery 3 to tow up to 3,500 kg.
Key Design Features
  • Cylinder Block: Constructed from Compacted Graphite Iron (CGI), which provides the strength of cast iron but at a significantly lower weight.
  • Timing System: Uses a complex “belt and chain” setup. A main timing belt drives the high-pressure fuel pump and camshafts at the front, while short chains link the intake and exhaust cams at the rear.
  • Oil System: Features a high-capacity sump designed to maintain oil flow even at extreme off-road angles (up to 45 degrees).
Critical Maintenance & “Known Issues”
While powerful, the 276DT requires strict maintenance to avoid catastrophic failure:
  • Crankshaft Failure: A known (though debated) issue where the main bearings can spin, leading to a snapped crankshaft. Using high-quality 5W30 (ACEA A5/B5) oil and reducing service intervals to 10,000 km is highly recommended.
  • Oil Pump Housing: On pre-2009 models, the oil pump housing (where the timing belt tensioner attaches) could crack. Upgrading to the reinforced 2009+ oil pump is a standard preventative measure during a belt change.
  • EGR Valves: These often clog with soot, causing “Limp Mode.” Many owners in South Africa choose to blank/delete the EGRs to improve engine longevity.
  • Timing Belt Interval: Land Rover suggests 160,000 km, but specialists strongly advise replacement every 100,000 km or 7 years.
