Landrover Discovery 2.5tdi TD5 18p/15p/11p/10p engine

R32,500.00

The Land Rover Td5 is a 2.5-litre, 5-cylinder turbodiesel engine renowned for its unique “warble” sound and being the last engine designed in-house by Land Rover. It powered the Discovery 2 and Defender from 1998 to 2006.
The engine evolved through several internal codes, primarily split into “10P/11P” (Euro 2) and “15P/18P” (Euro 3) versions.

Evolution of Engine Codes
1. Early Versions: 10P (Discovery) & 11P (Defender)
  • Era: 1998–2001 (Euro 2 emissions).
  • Fuel System: Features a single fuel return line to the fuel filter.
  • Head Design: “External” fuel galleries. The injectors are prone to leaking diesel into the oil if the O-rings fail.
  • Cylinder Head: These heads lack the additional strengthening found in later models and are more prone to “walking” (shifting) on the block due to plastic locating dowels.
2. Late Versions: 15P (Discovery) & 18P (Defender)
  • Era: 2002–2006 (Euro 3 emissions).
  • Fuel System: Features an internal fuel return within the cylinder head (identified by 3 fuel pipes at the rear of the head instead of 2).
  • Refinements: Higher injection pressures, improved ECU (NNN series which is flash-programmable), and a revised camshaft.
  • Durability: Use steel locating dowels to prevent head movement and have a more robust cylinder head casting to reduce cracking.

Key Design Features
  • Unit Injectors (EUI): Unlike common rail, each cylinder has its own high-pressure pump operated by the camshaft. This allows for high efficiency but requires specialized electronic calibration.
  • Oil Centrifuge: In addition to a standard oil filter, the Td5 uses a centrifugal bypass filter to remove very fine carbon particles, extending engine life.
  • No Timing Belt: The Td5 uses a duplex timing chain, significantly reducing the risk of catastrophic timing failure compared to the older 300Tdi or newer TDV6.
Critical “Must-Know” Issues
  • Oil in Harness: Diesel/oil can “wick” through the injector wiring loom into the ECU. This is a common cause of misfiring and requires a relatively cheap “injector harness” replacement.
  • Oil Pump Bolt: On early 10P/11P engines, the bolt holding the oil pump sprocket could vibrate loose, leading to instant engine seizure. It is standard practice to check and Loctite this bolt.
  • Plastic Dowels: As mentioned, 10P engines should have their plastic head dowels replaced with steel ones during any head gasket job.
