Key Design Features
  • Fuel System: Utilises Common Rail Direct Injection (CRDi) for precise fuel metering, which reduces noise and improves fuel economy.
  • Aspiration: Early versions often used a Fixed Geometry Turbocharger (WGT), while later higher-output versions (like the 140 hp variant) were upgraded to a Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT) to minimise lag.
  • Timing System: Driven by a timing belt. As this is an interference engine, a belt failure will lead to catastrophic internal damage.
  • Valvetrain: Despite being a 16-valve engine, it employs a Single Overhead Camshaft (SOHC) design.

Maintenance & Known Issues
  • Timing Belt Interval: Vital to replace every 90,000 km to 100,000 km. It is standard practice to replace the water pump and tensioners at the same time.
  • Oil Pickup Clogging: Carbon buildup—often caused by failing injector seals—can clog the oil pickup strainer in the sump, leading to oil starvation and turbo failure.
  • Crankshaft Position Sensor: A frequent cause of stalling or “no-start” issues, particularly when the engine is warm.
  • EGR & DPF: Like most diesels of this era, the EGR valve is prone to carbon sticking, and models with a DPF may experience clogging if used primarily for short city trips.
