the hyundai g6cu (also known as the 3.5 sigma v6) is a naturally aspirated, 24-valve petrol engine. it was the largest and most powerful engine in hyundai’s “sigma” family, commonly found in the first-generation hyundai santa fe (sm), terracan, and the kia sorento (bl).

key design features
- cast iron block: unlike the smaller 2.7l delta v6 which uses aluminium, the 3.5l sigma features a cast iron block. this makes it physically heavier but extremely durable for 4×4 use and towing.
- timing system: it uses a timing belt that drives all four camshafts. it is an interference engine, meaning a belt failure will result in catastrophic internal damage.
- variable intake system (vis): the intake manifold features butterfly valves that adjust the air path length to maximize low-end torque for pulling heavy loads.
- hydraulic lifters: the engine uses hydraulic lash adjusters, so there is no manual valve clearance adjustment required.

maintenance & known issues
- timing belt interval: strictly replace every 90,000 km to 100,000 km. always replace the water pump and hydraulic tensioner at the same time, as they are deep inside the timing cover.
- vis butterfly screws: similar to the 2.7l v6, the small screws holding the intake flaps can vibrate loose over time and be sucked into the engine. many mechanics recommend checking or securing them during a major service.
- oil leaks: high-mileage units often leak from the valve cover gaskets and the camshaft seals. because it is a v6, oil from the rear bank can leak onto the exhaust, creating a burning smell.
- fuel consumption: the g6cu is notoriously “thirsty,” often averaging 14l–16l/100km in heavy suvs like the terracan or sorento.
- spark plug access: the upper intake manifold must be removed to access the three spark plugs on the rear bank (bank 1)
