The Honda K24A is a 2.4-litre, 4-cylinder engine from the legendary K-Series family. Often described as the “big brother” to the K20, it is famous for its exceptional torque, reliability, and versatility. It is a staple in the Honda Accord (and Accord Euro/Acura TSX), as well as the CR-V and Odyssey.

Major Variants
There are two distinct versions of the K24A depending on the Accord trim level:
- Economy Versions (K24A1/A4/A8):
- Found in: Accord Comfort/Executive, CR-V, Element.
- Power: 118 kW – 124 kW (158–166 hp).
- VTEC Style: “Eco-VTEC” focused on fuel saving. Only one intake valve opens at low RPM to create a “swirl” effect for better combustion.
- High-Performance Versions (K24A2/A3):
- Found in: Honda Accord Euro (CL9) / Acura TSX.
- Power: 140 kW – 150 kW (187–200 hp).
- VTEC Style: “True” 3-rocker VTEC on both intake and exhaust cams. This version is highly sought after by tuners for its high-flowing cylinder head.
Key Design Features
- i-VTEC: Combines Variable Valve Timing (VTEC) with Variable Timing Control (VTC). VTC allows the intake cam to advance or retard by up to 50 degrees, providing a very smooth power delivery.
- Balance Shafts: Unlike the K20, the K24 includes an oil pump-driven balance shaft assembly in the sump to cancel out the vibrations inherent in a large 4-cylinder engine, making the Accord feel much more refined.
- Clockwise Rotation: Like all K-series engines, it rotates clockwise (unlike the older H22/F20 Accord engines).
Common Maintenance & Issues
- Oil Consumption: The K24A is known to “drink” oil, especially high-mileage units or those driven hard. If the oil level drops too low, the VTEC system will fail to engage.
- Timing Chain Stretch: While designed to last the life of the engine, the chain can stretch if oil changes are neglected. A “Check Engine” light with a P0341 code usually indicates a stretched chain.
- VTC Actuator “Rattle”: A common “grinding” or “rattling” sound for 2 seconds on a cold start is often a failing VTC actuator gear. It is annoying but rarely causes immediate engine failure.
- Drive Belt Tensioner: The automatic tensioner for the alternator/AC belt often leaks fluid or squeaks, requiring replacement around 150,000 km.
