Hyundai i10 / i20 1.2L G4LA non vvti Engine

R16,500.00

The Hyundai G4LA (non-VVT) is a 1.2-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine from the Kappa family. Introduced around 2008, this specific version lacks the Variable Valve Timing (VVT) found in later “Dual CVVT” models, making it a simpler, highly reliable choice for the first-generation Hyundai i10 and i20.
Technical Specifications
The G4LA is a compact, lightweight engine designed specifically for city driving and high fuel efficiency.
Feature Specification
Displacement 1,248 cc (1.2L)

Key Design Features
  • Timing System: It uses a timing chain rather than a belt. This is a major advantage for maintenance, as the chain is designed to last the life of the engine, provided oil changes are done on time.
  • Construction: Both the cylinder block and head are made of aluminium alloy, which helps keep the front-end weight of the i10 and i20 low for better handling.
  • Offset Crankshaft: The crankshaft is slightly offset from the cylinder centreline. This reduces friction between the piston and the cylinder wall, improving fuel economy and reducing noise.
  • Simplicity: Without VVT (Variable Valve Timing) solenoids and phasers, there are fewer electronic components to fail as the engine ages.
Common Vehicle Applications
  • Hyundai i10 (PA): 2008–2011 (Pre-facelift models).
  • Hyundai i20 (PB): 2008–2012 (Early European and Indian spec).
Maintenance & Known Issues
  • Oil Grade: It strictly requires 5W-30 or 10W-40 synthetic oil. Using poor quality oil can cause the hydraulic tensioner for the timing chain to stick, leading to “chain rattle.”
  • Spark Plugs: Usually requires replacement every 40,000 km. Access is easy as they sit directly under the top plastic cover.
  • Tappet Noise: Because it lacks VVT, the valvetrain is very simple, but high-mileage units can develop a slight “ticking” if oil sludge builds up in the lifters.
  • Cooling: Like most small aluminium engines, it does not tolerate overheating. Ensure the electric radiator fan is kicking in correctly, as a warped head on these is expensive to skim.
