The Ford Ranger 2.5 TD WL (or WL-T) is a 2.5-litre, 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine. Known as a “workhorse,” it was co-developed with Mazda and powered the Ford Ranger / Mazda B-Series (Drifter/Bravo) from roughly 1998 to 2011.

Key Design Features
  • Aspiration: Features a conventional turbocharger (often the IHI RHF5) and an intercooler on higher-spec “T” versions.
  • Fuel System: Uses a mechanical fuel injection pump (prechamber design) rather than modern common-rail technology. This makes it less sensitive to poor fuel quality but noisier than newer diesels.
  • Timing System: Driven by a timing belt that typically requires replacement every 100,000 km.
Common Issues & Maintenance
  • Glow Plug Failures: Hard cold starts or smoke on startup often indicate faulty glow plugs or a failing relay.
  • Overheating: The WL-T is notorious for cracked cylinder heads if overheated. It is critical to maintain the cooling system and avoid pushing the engine too hard when it’s already running hot.
  • Injection Pump Sieve: A common cause of sudden power loss is a clogged sieve (tiny filter) inside the diesel pump inlet.
  • Oil Viscosity: Using oil that is too thin can cause excessive diesel knock or injector noise; a 10W-40 or heavier oil is often recommended for older units.
