The Ford 2.0L LF20 (often badged as the Duratec HE) is a naturally aspirated, 4-cylinder petrol engine based on the Mazda L (MZR) architecture. It is a lightweight, all-aluminium engine that served as a global workhorse for Ford, Mazda, and Volvo throughout the 2000s and 2010s.

  • Keyless Crankshaft: A critical technical detail for mechanics is that the crankshaft pulley and timing gears are not keyed. They are held in place solely by friction from the crank bolt, requiring specialized locking tools for any timing-related repairs.
  • Intake Technology: Features a plastic intake manifold with swirl flaps (tumble valves) to improve airflow at low speeds, though these are a known failure point on early high-mileage units.

  • Oil Consumption: Higher mileage engines (150,000+ km) may suffer from worn valve stem seals or piston rings, leading to increased oil use.
  • Swirl Flaps: On early models, the plastic flaps in the intake manifold can break off and be ingested by the engine, causing catastrophic internal damage.
  • Thermostat: The plastic thermostat housing often fails or the thermostat sticks, leading to overheating or slow warm-up times.
