The Chevrolet F16D4 engine is a 1.6-litre, naturally aspirated inline-four petrol engine belonging to the GM Family 1 series. It is a modernized version of the older F16D3 engine, updated with variable valve timing to improve power and fuel efficiency. It typically produces 91 kW (124 hp) and 155 Nm of torque in the Chevrolet Cruze.

Common Problems & Vulnerabilities
While structurally robust due to the cast iron block, the F16D4 has several well-documented weak points that owners should monitor:
- Oil Cooler (Heat Exchanger) Leaks: The internal rubber gaskets fail regularly. This causes engine oil to leak into the cooling system, resulting in a brown “sludge” or “milkshake” appearance in the coolant expansion tank.
- VVT Solenoid & Gear Rattling: The variable valve timing gears can wear out or become clogged due to poor oil quality. This causes a distinct metallic rattling or knocking sound for a few seconds during a cold start.
- Valve Cover Gasket Leaks: The rubber gasket hardens quickly, leaking oil into the spark plug wells. This often leads to engine misfires.
- Ignition Coil Pack Failure: The engine uses a single-piece cassette coil pack. If one cylinder’s coil fails, the entire module must be replaced.
- Thermostat Housing Failure: The original plastic thermostat housing is prone to cracking and leaking. Upgrading to an aftermarket aluminum housing is a highly recommended fix.
