Chev Spark 1.2 b12d Engine

R18,500.00

The Chevrolet B12D engine (also referred to as the B12D1 or B12D2 depending on the exact model year) is a 1.2-litre, naturally aspirated inline-four petrol engine. Developed under General Motors’ S-TEC II engine family (originally by Daewoo), it was specifically designed for compact city cars. In the Chevrolet Spark, this engine produces 60 kW (80–84 hp) and 108 Nm of torque
Key Technical Specifications
  • Configuration: Inline 4-cylinder, DOHC (Double Overhead Camshaft), 16 valves.
  • Displacement: 1.2 litres (1,206 cc).
  • Block Material: Cast iron block with an aluminum alloy cylinder head.
  • Timing Drive: Timing chain system, unlike the belt-driven F-series engines.
  • Fuel System: Multi-point electronic fuel injection (MPFI) focused heavily on urban fuel economy.
  • Lifters: Mechanical solid lifters requiring periodic valve clearance checks.
Common Problems & Vulnerabilities
While considered highly dependable and simple to work on, the B12D engine does have a few known weak points:
  • Timing Chain Stretch: If oil change intervals are skipped or low-quality oil is used, the timing chain can stretch and the hydraulic tensioner wears out. This presents as a noticeable metallic rattling sound during a cold start.
  • Ignition Coil Pack Misfires: The Spark often suffers from ignition system fatigue. Faulty coil packs or worn spark plugs will cause a rough idle, hesitation under acceleration, or a blinking engine check light.
  • Sensitivity to Overheating: The small aluminum head cannot handle excessive heat well. If the cooling fan fails or the thermostat gets stuck, it is highly prone to blowing the head gasket.
  • Oil Consumption: In high-mileage variants (typically exceeding 120,000 km), it can begin burning oil due to worn valve stem seals or piston rings.
