BMW 320i 3/5 series F30/F20 N20B20 engine

R68,000.00

The BMW N20 is a turbocharged inline four-cylinder petrol engine produced between 2011 and 2017. It was a pivotal design for BMW, representing their shift toward “downsizing” by replacing the naturally aspirated 3.0L inline-six (N52/N53) with a more efficient, higher-torque 2.0L turbocharged unit.

Key Models & Applications
The N20 powered a wide range of BMW vehicles, typically identified by the “20i” or “28i” suffix:
  • 3 Series (F30): 320i, 328i
  • 5 Series (F10): 520i, 528i
  • X Series: X1 (E84), X3 (F25), X4 (F26), X5 (F15 xDrive40e hybrid)
  • Z Series: Z4 (E89) sDrive18i, 20i, and 28i
  • Other: 1 Series (F20), 2 Series (F22), 4 Series (F32)
Reliability & Known Issues
While the N20 earned a spot on Wards Top 10 Engines list in 2012, it is well-known for specific failure points:
  • Timing Chain Guides: Pre-2015 models used a brittle polymer for guides that could fail prematurely, leading to catastrophic engine damage. BMW revised these parts in January 2015.
  • Oil Leaks: Common at the valve cover gasket and oil filter housing gasket.
  • Cooling System: The electric water pump and thermostat are prone to failure around 100,000–130,000 km.
  • Carbon Buildup: As a direct-injection engine, carbon can accumulate on intake valves, often requiring “walnut blasting” every 80,000–110,000 km to maintain performance.
Note on the N26: In the US, some models use the N26 engine, which is a SULEV (Super Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle) version of the N20 with minor fuel system and exhaust modifications.
