The BMW M47D20TÜ (specifically the 204D4 variant) is a 2.0-litre, turbocharged, inline 4-cylinder diesel engine [1]. Produced from 2001 to 2005, this highly durable power unit was featured in the facelifted (LCI) BMW E46 320d (Sedan, Touring, Coupé, and Convertible) . 
Representing the “Technical Update” (TÜ) of the original M47 engine, this variant brought a massive evolutionary leap forward by discarding the troublesome old rotary injection pump in favour of a modern common-rail system [1]. It is widely celebrated for its exceptional fuel efficiency and highly resilient mechanical core .

Core Engineering Design
The facelifted 204D4 engine upgraded almost every critical system of the pre-facelift 136 hp engine, focusing on smoother power delivery, higher torque, and increased reliability .
  • Cast Iron Block with Expanded Displacement: The engine utilizes a heavy-duty cast iron engine block built to withstand intense cylinder pressure. BMW altered the dimensions for the facelift, expanding displacement from 1,951 cc to 1,995 cc by increasing both the bore and stroke 
  • Bosch Common-Rail Injection System: The defining upgrade of the TÜ variant was the switch to a high-pressure Bosch common-rail direct injection system operating at 1,600 bar [1]. This replaced the failure-prone VP44 distributor pump, delivering vastly better fuel atomisation and reducing harsh diesel clatter . 
  • Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT): It utilizes a Garrett GT1749V turbocharger with variable exhaust vanes [1]. On earlier versions of this facelift engine, the vanes were controlled via vacuum lines, while later production years switched to a faster electronic stepper motor actuator, virtually eliminating turbo lag . 
  • Dual Overhead Cam (DOHC) 16V Head: Driven by a robust front-mounted timing chain system, the aluminium cylinder head features 4 valves per cylinder for highly efficient breathing [1].

The introduction of common-rail technology transformed the facelift E46 320d into a punchy performer and a legendary fuel-saver, capable of achieving under 5.5L/100km on long highway cruises.

Critical Maintenance & Failure Points
While the core mechanical assembly (block, pistons, crankshaft, and timing chain) is incredibly tough and easily passes 400,000 km, the M47TÜ features a few distinct peripheral weaknesses that require active management:
  • The Swirl Flap Hazard: Critical Issue: Models equipped with an automatic transmission (and many later manual versions) feature vacuum-actuated metal swirl flaps inside the intake manifold. Over time, the small screws holding these plates loosen due to soot buildup. If they snap, the metal flap is sucked directly into the engine cylinder, causing instant, catastrophic piston and valve destruction. Installing aftermarket blanking plates is an essential preventative fix.
  • Clogged Crankcase Breather Valve: The factory oil separator system uses a felt “toilet-roll” style filter element . If neglected, it clogs with oil sludge, building high pressure inside the crankcase . This forces engine oil past the turbocharger seals, causing heavy blue exhaust smoke and premature turbo failure . Replacing it with the upgraded, maintenance-free BMW “vortex” style separator solves this issue permanently.
  • Turbocharger Wear: The Garrett turbos work hard on these engines. Blocked breathers or overextended oil change intervals cause early bearing wear. If you notice a distinct “police siren” whining noise under acceleration, the turbocharger requires rebuilding or replacement.
  • Crankshaft Harmonic Balancer: The main crankshaft auxiliary pulley relies on an internal rubber dampening layer to smooth out diesel vibrations. Over time, this rubber dries out and splits. If it separates completely, it will throw off the drive belts, causing an immediate loss of power steering, alternator charging, and water pump operation
