The BMW N13 is a 1.6L turbocharged inline four-cylinder petrol engine produced between 2011 and 2016. Part of the “Prince” engine family co-developed with the PSA Group (Peugeot/Citroën), it was BMW’s first mass-produced four-cylinder turbo since the 1970s and served as a high-efficiency replacement for several naturally aspirated engines like the N43 and N46.

Technical Specifications
The N13 is technically identical to the N18 engine found in MINI Cooper S models but is adapted for longitudinal (rear-wheel-drive) mounting.

Common Applications
The N13 was primarily used in entry-level European and international market models:
  • 1 Series (F20/F21): 114i, 116i, 118i, and early 120i.
  • 3 Series (F30/F31): 316i and 320i EfficientDynamics Edition.
Reliability & Known Issues
While efficient, the N13 is considered highly maintenance-sensitive. Key failure points include:
  • High-Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP): Prone to failure, especially in pre-2014 models, leading to rough starts or limp mode.
  • Timing Chain Stretch: The plastic guides and spring-loaded tensioner can wear, often becoming critical after 120,000 km.
  • Coolant System: The plastic expansion tank and various rubber seals are known to crack or leak over time.
  • Carbon Buildup: As a direct-injection engine, the intake valves require “walnut blasting” roughly every 80,000–100,000 km to maintain performance.
  • Oil Consumption: Higher-than-average consumption is common, often linked to the PCV system or worn valve stem seals.
Successor
The N13 was phased out starting in 2015 and replaced by the B38 1.5L three-cylinder and B48 2.0L four-cylinder modular engines.
