The Audi CDN (often referred to as CDNC or CDNB depending on the power output) is a 2.0-litre turbocharged inline-four petrol engine from the EA888 Gen 2 family. Introduced around 2008, it was a staple in Audi’s longitudinal engine lineup for over half a decade.

Vehicle Applications
The CDN series was primarily used in Audi’s longitudinal platforms between 2008 and 2015.
  • Audi A4 (B8): The most common application for both 180hp and 211hp variants.
  • Audi A5 (8T): Widely used in Sportback, Coupe, and Cabriolet models.
  • Audi Q5 (8R): Found in early 2.0 TFSI quattro models.
  • Audi A6 (C7): Utilised in entry-level 2.0 TFSI variants.
Reliability and Critical Issues
While smooth and powerful, the CDN (EA888 Gen 2) is notorious for several high-cost mechanical flaws.
  • Excessive Oil Consumption: Due to faulty piston ring design, many CDN engines consume over 1 litre of oil every 1,000 km. This often requires a full engine rebuild with revised pistons and rings to resolve permanently.
  • Timing Chain Tensioner Failure: Early versions of the tensioner are prone to failing, causing the chain to skip and leading to catastrophic valve-to-piston contact. Proactive replacement with the revised “Gen 3” tensioner is highly recommended.
  • Water Pump Failures: The plastic water pump housing is known to leak or crack prematurely.
  • Carbon Buildup: Like all TFSI engines, carbon deposits on intake valves can lead to rough idling, misfires, and reduced performance, typically requiring walnut blasting every 80,000–100,000 km.
