Reliability and Known Issues
As an EA888 Gen 2 unit, the CDH engine is notorious for several high-cost maintenance issues that surfaced as the engines aged.
  • Excessive Oil Consumption: This is the most significant flaw, caused by poorly designed piston rings and pistons. Many units require an engine rebuild to replace these components and stop the oil burning.
  • Timing Chain Tensioner Failure: The original tensioner design was prone to failure, which could cause the chain to skip and lead to catastrophic engine damage. Owners often upgrade to the revised “Gen 3” tensioner for safety.
  • Carbon Buildup: Like all direct-injection engines, carbon deposits accumulate on the intake valves, eventually causing rough idling and power loss.
  • Water Pump Failure: The plastic housing on the water pump is known to crack or leak prematurely.
