The Audi CAG (typically referring to the CAGA variant) is a 2.0-litre Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) diesel engine. Part of the EA189 family, it was a pivotal engine for Audi as it marked the transition to Common Rail (CR) technology, offering significantly smoother and quieter operation compared to the older “Pumpe Düse” (PD) units.

Reliability and Known Issues
While generally robust and capable of high mileage (often exceeding 300,000 km), the CAG engine has specific maintenance focus areas.
  • Oil Pump Hex Drive: Earlier EA189 units have a 6mm hexagonal shaft driving the oil pump that can round off, leading to sudden loss of oil pressure and engine failure.
  • DPF & EGR Clogging: Frequent short city trips can lead to Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) blockage or Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve failure.
  • HPFP Failure: The high-pressure fuel pump can occasionally fail and send metal shavings through the fuel system, requiring a costly overhaul.
  • Dieselgate: As an EA189 engine, it was subject to global recalls regarding emissions software updates.
