Audi A3/TT 1.8t 20v ARY engine

R17,500.00

The Audi ARY engine is a high-performance 1.8-litre, 20-valve turbocharged inline-four petrol engine. Part of the EA113 family, it is closely related to the AUQ and AJQ codes but was specifically designed for quattro all-wheel-drive configurations in compact Audi and SEAT models.
Key Specifications
The ARY is known for its “small port” cylinder head and strong low-end torque delivery.
Feature Specification
Displacement 1,781 cc
Configuration Inline-4, DOHC, 20-Valve (5 valves per cylinder)
Power Output 180 hp (132 kW) @ 5,500 rpm
Max Torque 235 Nm @ 1,950–5,000 rpm
Compression Ratio 9.5:1
Turbocharger K03s (typically)
Block Type 06A (internal water pump)
Vehicle Applications
The ARY was primarily fitted to vehicles produced between 1999 and 2006, particularly those equipped with the Haldex quattro system.
  • Audi A3 (8L): 1.8 T quattro (1998–2003).
  • Audi TT (8N): 1.8 T quattro (1998–2006).
  • SEAT Leon (1M): 1.8 20VT 4 (quattro equivalent).
  • SEAT Toledo (1M): 1.8 20VT.
Performance and Reliability
The engine is highly regarded by enthusiasts for its balance of reliability and tuning potential.
  • Tuning: Like other 1.8T variants, the ARY can easily reach 210–225 hp with a Stage 1 ECU remap. The stock internals are generally considered safe up to approximately 300–350 hp before forged rods are required.
  • Oil Sludge: A critical maintenance point; using high-quality synthetic oil and regular changes is essential to prevent the oil pickup pipe from clogging.
  • Timing Belt: Must be replaced along with the water pump every 60,000 to 90,000 km to prevent catastrophic engine failure.
  • Coil Packs: A known weak point that can cause misfires; many owners upgrade to later “red top” R8-style coils for better reliability.
