The Kia Picanto 1.2L G4LA (non-VVT) is a 4-cylinder petrol engine from the Kappa family. In the Picanto (notably the TA generation), this 1.25-litre unit was the “big” engine option, providing a significant boost in refinement and highway capability over the 3-cylinder 1.0L version.

Key Design Features
  • Timing System: It features a silent timing chain drive. Unlike the older Kia Picanto engines (G4HE) which used belts, the G4LA chain is designed to be maintenance-free for the life of the engine.
  • Construction: Lightweight all-aluminium block and cylinder head. It uses a “ladder frame” construction for the lower block to increase rigidity and reduce vibrations.
  • Offset Crankshaft: The crankshaft is offset by 11mm from the cylinder bore axis. This reduces the side-thrust force on the pistons, lowering friction and improving fuel economy.
  • Maintenance Simplicity: Without the VVT solenoids, the top end of the engine is less complex, making it cheaper to repair if the cylinder head needs to be removed.

Maintenance & Known Issues
  • Oil Maintenance: It is highly sensitive to oil quality. Use 5W-30 synthetic oil to ensure the hydraulic timing chain tensioner stays clean. A “rattling” sound on startup usually indicates a clogged tensioner or a stretched chain due to late oil changes.
  • Spark Plugs: These are deep-seated; ensure the “O-rings” on the ignition coils are in good condition to prevent oil from leaking into the spark plug wells.
  • Cooling System: The plastic coolant flange on the side of the head is a known weak point. It can crack with age, leading to slow coolant loss and potential overheating.
  • Idling Issues: Carbon buildup on the throttle body can cause the engine to dip in RPM or stall when coming to a stop. A simple cleaning usually fixes this.
