The BMW M54B22 is a 2.2-litre, naturally aspirated, inline 6-cylinder petrol engine produced between 2000 and 2006. It represents the smallest-displacement entry in the highly acclaimed M54 straight-six engine family. 
In the E46 chassis, this engine was fitted exclusively to vehicles badged as the 320i (and 320Ci). Because it features a 2.2-litre displacement despite the “20” badging, parts suppliers, salvage yards, and enthusiasts globally refer to this specific power unit simply as the “E46 2.2 M54” to differentiate it from the older pre-facelift 2.0-litre M52TU engine. 

Core Engineering Design
The M54B22 is highly celebrated for its turbine-smooth operation, lightweight architecture, and linear power delivery. 
  • All-Aluminium Block with Cast-Iron Liners: Both the engine block and cylinder head are cast from a lightweight aluminium alloy to keep the vehicle’s front end light and responsive. To ensure exceptional long-term wear resistance, the cylinder walls are lined with highly robust cast-iron cylinder sleeves. 
  • Double VANOS System: It features fully variable valve timing on both the intake and exhaust camshafts. Controlled continuously via engine oil pressure solenoids, it shifts the camshaft positions to flatten the torque curve, extracting maximum efficiency from a smaller displacement. 
  • 3-Stage DISA Valve (Dual Resonance Intake Manifold): To optimize volumetric efficiency, the plastic intake manifold uses a computer-controlled butterfly valve (the DISA valve). At low and mid-range RPMs, it alters internal airflow paths to maximize air velocity (boosting torque); at high RPMs, it opens a short path for maximum airflow volume (boosting horsepower). 
  • Fully Electronic Throttle (Drive-by-Wire): The M54B22 completely eliminated mechanical throttle cables in favour of a fully electronic, computer-controlled throttle body operated by the Siemens MS43 engine management system.

Performance Output (E46 320i Application)
Because of its distinctly short-stroke layout (80mm bore vs a tiny 72mm stroke), the M54B22 is an incredibly rev-happy engine. It produces very little torque down low but builds power beautifully as it screams toward its 6,500 RPM redline, accompanied by a metallic straight-six howl. 
  • Power Output: 125 kW (168 hp / 170 PS) at 6,100 RPM. 
  • Torque Output: 210 Nm peaking at 3,500 RPM.

Critical Maintenance & Failure Points
While the internal bottom end (crankshaft, rods, pistons) is structurally bulletproof, the external polymer, cooling, and rubber components degrade heavily with age and heat cycles:
  • Brittle CCV (Crankcase Ventilation) System: The oil separator unit and its web of plastic hoses hidden under the intake manifold become extremely brittle. When they crack, they cause massive unmetered vacuum leaks, resulting in lean fuel codes (P0171/P0174), a rough cold idle, and persistent engine misfires. 
  • DISA Valve Flap Wear: The internal plastic butterfly flap wears loose on its drive pin over time. If left to rattle, the tiny metal pin holding the flap can vibrate completely free and get sucked directly into the engine cylinder, leading to catastrophic piston and valve destruction.
  • Fragile Cooling System: The plastic expansion tank, thermostat housing, and water pump impeller are notorious for cracking. Because the M54 uses an aluminium block, any severe overheating event will pull the head bolt threads completely out of the block casing, destroying the engine block permanently. 
  • Hardened VANOS Seals: The factory rubber O-rings inside the double VANOS pistons harden and turn to plastic over time. This causes oil pressure to bleed off internally, resulting in a noticeable loss of low-end torque, flat spots during acceleration, and hesitations under 3,000 RPM.
