The BMW N53B30 is a 3.0L naturally aspirated inline six-cylinder petrol engine produced between 2006 and 2013. It was the final naturally aspirated straight-six engine BMW ever produced, serving as the high-efficiency successor to the N52.
Notably, the N53 was never sold in the United States, Canada, or Australia due to high sulphur content in those regions’ fuel, which would have damaged its sensitive direct-injection components.

Common Applications
The N53B30 was widely used in European-spec models, replacing the N52 in the following:
  • 3 Series (E90/E91/E92/E93): 325i, 330i.
  • 5 Series (E60/E61/F10): 523i, 525i, 528i, 530i.
  • 6 Series (E63): 630i.
Reliability & Maintenance
While highly efficient, the N53 is more complex than its predecessors and has several well-documented failure points:
  • High-Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP): Prone to failure, leading to long cranks and limp mode.
  • Piezoelectric Injectors: These are highly sensitive and expensive to replace; failure causes severe misfires and rough idling.
  • NOx Sensor & Catalytic Converter: The lean-burn system relies on an NOx sensor and storage catalyst that frequently fail, especially if low-quality fuel is used.
  • Carbon Buildup: Because it is direct-injected, intake valves do not get “washed” by fuel, leading to carbon deposits that require walnut blasting every 80k–100k km.
  • Cooling System: Like the N52, its electric water pump and thermostat typically fail around 100k–130k km.
